A Nurse’s Perspective

We all have our “why” in life, and sometimes, reminding ourselves why we do what we do and why we made certain choices in life (especially those related to our work) can be empowering and help reconnect us to our purpose, passion, and personal mission!

In this feature we hear from Tabatha Hayhurst-Keith, BSN, RN, Regulatory and Patient Safety Manager at WVU Medicine United Hospital Center.

Q: Why did you go into nursing?

A: I believe nursing is a calling. God placed people, situations, and events in my path that led me here. That person is my father, and the event was his myocardial infarction, which required quadruple bypass surgery at the age of 45.

It was several years after his heart attack that I officially became a nurse. My goal has always been to make a difference for others faced with cardiac illnesses.

This is a profession that requires continuous education, adaptation, teamwork, and community. All of these requirements have culminated together and led me to one of the most rewarding careers that I simply love.
