Less than six months since the beginning of construction, WVU Medicine United Hospital Center (UHC) Chief Executive Officer and President, David F. Hess, M.D., along with officials from March-Westin, marked a milestone in the construction phase of the Elkins Corridor Medical Center with the ceremonial “topping off” of the steel structure.
“This project will make us better poised to meet the healthcare needs of the Tygart Valley region by providing expanded access to high quality care,” said Dr. Hess. “UHC’s evolution to become a regional referral center for the central West Virginia market will only be enhanced by this new Elkins location.”
On June 6, UHC broke ground on the future state-of-the-art clinic in Randolph County. When completed later next year, the Elkins Corridor Medical Center will consist of primary and outpatient services for residents of Elkins and surrounding communities.
“This day is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of all who are committed to the completion of this new facility,” said Vice President, Matthew Bourne, at March-Westin Company, Inc. “Now with this last beam in place, I am pleased to announce that we are progressing according to schedule.”
Construction of UHC’s newest clinic will cost more than $37 million, occupy 38,000 square feet, and will be conveniently located off Corridor H on North Randolph Avenue. This site is a collaborative effort among UHC, March-Westin Company, Inc., Elkins community leadership, and the Thrasher Group, Inc., and will evoke a patient-centered design when its doors open.
Employees, board members, political officials, and the media autographed the beam, which displayed about one hundred names. The Topping Off Ceremony celebrated the final beam being hoisted into the 250 tons of structural steel used in the expansion of the steel skeleton.
This marks UHC’s first venture of this size and scope in Randolph County. When the new facility opens in 2025 with 34 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, and one cast room, nearly 30 people will be employed.
A centerpiece of the new facility will be the multiple specialty conveniences available, including:
- Essential health and wellness services consisting of lab collection, primary care, infusion, and walk-in Family Medicine (open for extended and weekend hours)
- Comprehensive imaging services with CT, X-Ray, ultrasound, echocardiography, and vascular screening
- A range of rotating physician specialty clinics will be available including audiology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, oncology, orthopaedics, pain medicine, pulmonology, rheumatology, and urology

The Topping Off Ceremony marked a milestone in the construction phase of the new facility in Elkins. It has become a ritual in the construction industry when the final beam of steel is placed atop a structure.
