Feb 28, 2025
February is National Cancer Prevention Month. It is important to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
1). In addition to February being recognized as heart month, there has been a lot of awareness directed toward cancer prevention during this month.
You are exactly right - awareness is truly the key as it helps to emphasize the importance of regular screening and encourages individuals to be proactive in monitoring their health. When we promote early detection and prevention strategies, it helps to empower people to take charge of their own healthcare and can ultimately lead to better outcomes.
2). What are some things we can do to help prevent cancer?
Only 5–10% of cancer cases can be attributed to genetics, whereas the remaining 90–95% have their roots in environment and lifestyle. So, it is important to focus on highlighting lifestyle choices and behaviors that can help prevent cancer, such as:
- Educating about the dangers of tobacco use.
- Emphasizing the importance of a well-balanced diet.
- Minimizing the intake of processed foods, red meats, and sugary beverages.
- Encouraging regular exercise and an active lifestyle
- Promoting the use of sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds.
- Raising awareness about vaccines that can prevent certain types of cancer, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for cervical and other cancers.
- Encouraging cancer screenings, such as colonoscopies, mammograms, and Pap tests, which helps to detect cancer early—when it is most treatable.
- Educating about potential environmental carcinogens
3). What does UHC offer to assist with cancer prevention?
Annually, UHC holds a men’s health event in September and a women’s health event in October.
During the men’s health event we conduct a PSA lab test, prostate exam and provide a take-home colorectal screening kit. During the women’s health event we conduct a breast exam, Pap test, provide a take-home colorectal screening kit, and schedule a mammogram.
Both health events require pre-registration and are at no cost to consumers. If you would like more information, please call 681-342-1804.
