February is National Snack Month Pt. 2

Feb 09, 2024

The Superbowl is this Sunday on CBS, and a majority of America’s will definitely be indulging with their snack foods of choice. The overwhelming fan favorite is chips and dip. In this week’s House Call find out how the registered dietitians at United Hospital Center, can help to transform your unhealthy snack foods, just in time for the big game.

1). What can I offer to my guest instead of chips and dip?

Let me share some ideas for more healthy options around this fan favorite.

  • Try pita chips and hummus instead of the greasy chips and dips that are full of fat and calories.
  • A great alternative is lightly salted tortilla chips with homemade salsa and guacamole.
  • A real crowd pleaser are raw vegetables with low-fat ranch dip made with fat-free sour cream.

2). Buffalo chicken dip is a fan favorite. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this classic dip healthier?

Yes, there are a couple substitutes that you can use to not only make this dip healthier, but also tastier.

  • Use Neufchâtel cheese or reduced-fat cream cheese instead of full-fat cream cheese.
  • Use a low-fat or fat-free ranch dressing or a reduced-sodium ranch seasoning packet. You won’t notice the difference.
  • Use reduced-fat shredded cheese
  • Use fresh chicken or rotisserie chicken in place of canned chicken. This will actually improve the taste of your dip.

3). How can I avoid overeating, especially while watching every play of the game?

While the big game can become an invitation to eat unhealthy foods, it also encourages overeating. It is important for you to:

  • Be mindful of what you’re eating; try not to graze mindlessly
  • Use smaller plates
  • Pace yourself
  • Eat in moderation
  • Enjoy the moment, but don’t focus on counting calories
  • Spend time with friends and family
  • Make sure to enjoy the aspects of eating together
