Men’s Cancer Screenings, Part II

Sep 16, 2024

I’m Tori Hall, Cancer Program Facilitator at United Hospital Center. I am here to discuss the importance of cancer screening for men.

1) At what age should men consider cancer screening?

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most diagnosed cancer in the United States - so early detection is key. You should start getting screened for colorectal cancer soon after turning 45 and get screened regularly until you are 75.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, except for skin cancers. The chance of getting prostate cancer goes up as a man gets older. Middle-aged men should talk to their doctor about the benefits of prostate cancer screening.

Younger men tend to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, usually between the ages of 15 and 35 years old. Most testicular cancers can be cured, but there is a risk of infertility after treatment. Last year, nearly 9,500 men were diagnosed with testicular cancer.

2) What are some of the correlations between known risk factors and cancer?

While it’s not possible to know exactly why one person develops cancer and another does not, research shows that certain risk factors may increase a person’s chances of developing cancer.

Most people likely know the link between smoking and cancer. You may be surprised that drinking alcohol raises your risk of getting many cancers. The more you drink, the higher your risk. The risk of cancer is much higher for those who drink alcohol and also use tobacco.

Being overweight or obese is linked to an increased risk of developing 13 types of cancer. Eating healthy and being active can reduce that risk.

Early detection by undergoing recommended screening remains the best preventive measure. Finding cancer early is when treatment is most likely to succeed.
